SP Leader Azam Khan Released From Sitapur Jail After 27 Months, Welcomed By Shivpal Yadav

The court also said that the plea for regular bail can be filed with the concerned court within two weeks.

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Kahn walked out of jail on Friday after two years in Jail. Khan’s bail order was passed by the Supreme Court on Thursday after being reserved on May 17. The bail has been granted in a case related to the Kotwali police station in Uttar Pradesh. Khan was welcomed by his son Abdullah Azam, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and a large number of supporters.

Meanwhile, the apex court also cleared the way for Khan to apply for a regular bail as the interim bail would continue until an order is passed on regular bail, news agency ANI reported.

According to a report by news agency PTI, a bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao invoked its special power under Article 142 of the Constitution to grant relief to Khan in view of the peculiar facts of the case.

The court also said that the plea for regular bail can be filed with the concerned court within two weeks.

Khan’s wife Tanzeem Fatima welcomed the SC order by saying that it is the “victory of truth.” Talking to ANI, Fatima said, "This is the victory of truth. Court has done justice. I want to thank everyone who stood by us in these trying times.”

On the other hand, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also congratulated Khan on his release.

“Senior SP leader and MLA Mr. Hearty welcome to Shri Azam Khan ji on his release on bail. With this decision of bail, the Supreme Court has given new standards to justice. It is sure that he will be acquitted in all other false cases and cases. Lies have moments, not centuries!” Yadav wrote on Twitter.

Khan was in Sitapur jail since February 2020 in a cheating case and other cases lodged against him.
