Andhra & Telangana Issue Heatwave Advisory: 'Avoid Sun Exposure During Peak Hours'
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) heatwave is defined as a period of abnormally high temperatures, significantly exceeding normal climate patterns in a given region.

As temperatures continue to rise in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, both state governments have issued heatwave advisories urging residents to take preventive measures against extreme heat. With forecasts predicting soaring temperatures over the next three days, officials have emphasised the need for hydration, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours and adopting protective steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.
What Is A Heatwave?
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) heatwave is defined as a period of abnormally high temperatures, significantly exceeding normal climate patterns in a given region.
The severity of heatwaves depends on factors such as humidity, wind conditions, and prolonged exposure to high temperatures, making them a serious health risk. Authorities have warned that failure to take precautions could lead to severe health complications, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with existing medical conditions.
Telangana Government’s Advisory
The Telangana government has advised people to remain indoors, particularly between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, when the heat is at its peak. Residents have been urged to drink plenty of water, wear light cotton clothing, and use protective gear like hats and umbrellas when stepping outdoors.
The advisory also cautions against consuming dehydrating beverages such as tea, coffee, alcohol, and high-protein foods, which can contribute to heat-related illnesses.
Andhra Pradesh Heatwave Alert
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued a severe heatwave warning for multiple districts. Managing Director Ronanki Kurmanath stated that specific mandals in Alluri Sitarama Raju, Eluru, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Srikakulam districts will experience Level 08 severe heatwave conditions on March 11, 2025.
For March 12, 2025, heatwave conditions are expected to intensify further with severe heatwave conditions in 13 mandals and heatwave conditions in 162 mandals.
Temperature Trends
Recent temperature observations indicate a steady rise in heat levels, with:
- Bandi Atmakur in Nandyal District recording 38.3°C
- Errampeta in Alluri Sitarama Raju District at 37.6°C
- Gudipala in Chittoor District at 37.3°C
- Vinukonda in Palnadu District at 36.7°C
Precautionary Measures
Authorities have stressed the need for preventive measures such as staying indoors, using cooling methods, and avoiding direct sun exposure. Special care has been advised for pregnant women, new mothers, and individuals with heart conditions, diabetes, or high blood pressure, as they are more susceptible to heat-related health risks.
Emergency services have been put on high alert to handle potential heatwave-related cases. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions. With temperatures expected to remain high, residents are encouraged to follow the issued advisories to protect their health and well-being.
