Light Showers In Chennai Bring Respite From Heat, IMD Issues Alerts For 12 TN Districts
The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts cautioning residents about potential heavy rainfall. Chennai, in particular, has started to witness mild rains, with a cloudy sky.

Chennai Weather: The residents across Tamil Nadu are set to experience a significant change in weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains in several districts over the next four days. The shift in weather conditions is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat.
Chennai, in particular, has started to witness light showers, with a partly cloudy sky.
The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts, cautioning residents about potential heavy rainfall. According to a weather bulletin issued by the IMD on Monday, "Yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal now lies over Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal at 1.5 km above mean sea level."
This system is expected to trigger widespread light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal with isolated thunderstorms and lightning also likely.
Districts Under Weather Alerts
An orange alert has been issued for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in place for Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Karaikal, where heavy rain is expected at isolated locations.
Relief For Chennai
Despite the anticipated rainfall, the IMD has forecast no significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu for the next three days (March 10-12). However, temperatures may rise by 2-3°C above normal in certain pockets between March 13 and 15.
However, Chennai, which has been reeling under intense heat in recent weeks, is expected to experience light showers and cloudy conditions, providing temporary relief from the high temperatures.
