Tamil Nadu Man Dies At Son’s Engagement, His Body Brought To Marriage For Rituals Hours Later

A Tamil Nadu family advanced a wedding after the groom's father suffered a fatal heart attack during the engagement. Despite the loss, the groom's mother insisted on proceeding with the wedding.

In an unusual turn of events, a family in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district advanced a wedding to the night before its scheduled date after the groom’s father passed away during the engagement ceremony. Varadaraj, a 60-year-old textile merchant from Perugopanapalli village near Mathur, suffered a fatal heart attack on Sunday evening while attending the engagement of his eldest son, Manish, 26, to Kavya Priya, 21. The wedding was initially planned for Monday morning at a marriage hall in Mathur.

Following his sudden demise, the family members were considering postponing the ceremony. However, Varadaraj’s wife, Manjula, 48, insisted that the wedding should proceed as planned, believing it would bring peace to her husband’s soul. “My husband arranged this wedding. If his soul is to find peace, the wedding must happen,” she stated, as quoted by Times of India.

After much deliberation, both families decided to hold the wedding on Sunday night itself. During the ceremony, Varadaraj’s body, dressed in a silk dhoti and shirt, was brought to the hall. The mangalsutra was placed in his hands before being handed over to Manish, who tied it around Kavya Priya’s neck as attendees watched, TOI reported.

The funeral was conducted on Monday, a day after the wedding.

Odisha: Two Minor Brothers Found Dead, Family Alleges Father Killed Them Over Remarriage

In a separate incident, the bodies of two minor brothers, aged 14 and 11, were found hanging in Odisha's Nayagarh district on Monday, with their family alleging that their father killed them as they were opposed to his remarriage.

The incident occurred in the Fatehgarh police station area. The children's maternal uncle claimed that the boys were murdered and their bodies were later hanged to make it appear as suicide. "Why will innocent boys die by suicide? The two boys were first murdered, and then their bodies were hanged to show it as suicide. Their father killed them to clear the path for a second marriage," he alleged, as quoted by news agency PTI.

According to the police, the boys’ mother had passed away three years ago, and their father had been planning to remarry, a move strongly opposed by the children. Their maternal grandmother filed a complaint, stating that the boys had resisted their father’s remarriage.

However, their grandfather maintained that while the children were against their father’s decision, they took their own lives.

The police have detained the father for questioning and launched an investigation. Superintendent of Police S Susree stated that the exact cause of death would be determined after the post-mortem reports are received. The deceased brothers were students of Class 4 and Class 9.
