BJP's Suvendu Adhikari Calls For Extension Of Central Forces Deployment In Bengal, TMC Deems It 'Defeatist Mentality'

Following his meeting with the Election Commission-appointed special observer, Suvendu Adhikari talked about the importance of extending the deployment of central forces in W.B beyond the LS polls.

New Delhi: In the wake of violence in West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday advocated for an extension of the deployment of central forces for three months following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls. Following his meeting with the Election Commission-appointed special observer, Suvendu Adhikari stressed the importance of extending the deployment of central forces in West Bengal beyond the Lok Sabha polls.

Suvendu Adhikari cited the imperative need to prevent post-poll violence, referring to the tragic incidents that occurred after the 2021 assembly elections and the 2023 panchayat polls, which resulted in numerous casualties, reported news agency PTI.  Suvendu also mentioned that he would write to Governor CV Ananda Bose, the state's chief secretary, and Union home secretary with the demand.

BJP's Option To Salvage Their Diminishing Relevance Is By Prolonging Stay Of Central Forces: TMC

Suvendu's remarks drew a sharp response from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. The ruling party posted on X, stating, "It showed a defeatist mentality SuvenduWB (Adhikari) demanded that Central Forces be allowed to remain in Bengal even after MCC (model code of conduct) has been lifted. He knows it better than anyone else that his Party is in shambles, that BJP commands no political hold in Bengal".

"So, their only option to salvage their diminishing relevance is by prolonging the stay of Central Forces," it added.

A total of 92,000 personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are likely to be deployed in West Bengal, the highest in any state, for the elections, according to officials cited by PTI.
