Punjab Election 2022: Congress To Declare CM Candidate On Feb 6, Rahul Gandhi To Be Present

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said on Thursday that the name of the Congress chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab will be announced on February 6.

New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said on Thursday that the name of the Congress' chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab will be announced on February 6, news agency ANI reported.

Channi told media persons in Sri Chamkaur Sahib during his political programme that he will be present with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on that day, according to an ANI report.

"CM candidate will be announced on February 6. I will be with Rahul Gandhi on that day," ANI quoted Channi as saying.

Former chief of Punjab Pradesh Congress Sunil Jakhar has now backed Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi saying that he should be given time so that he continues working. Earlier, Jakhar sparked political reactions by claiming that 42 of 79 party MLAs wanted him to take over as the Chief Minister of Punjab during the change of leadership in the party.

"What they decide will be accepted by all," Jakhar told ANI on Thursday. He said that he is of the opinion that "Channi ji has been given the opportunity", and hence, he should be given time so that he continues working. Jakhar added that people had seen Channi's good work in four months.

Channi was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab in September last year, after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from his position.  Polling for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab will start on February 20. Votes will be counted on March 10.
