Who is Ram Sutar? Sculptor Behind Statue Of Unity Being Awarded Maharashtra Bhushan Award
Ram Sutar, renowned sculptor and creator of the Statue of Unity, has been awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, the state's highest civilian honour.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the legislative assembly on Thursday that the noted sculptor Ram Sutar has been chosen for Maharashtra Bhushan award. It is the highest civilian award of the state government. Sutar is a Padma Bhushan awardee and has designed the Statue of Unity which is the tallest statue of world with a height of 182 metres.
The Maharashtra CM said that the decision to honour Sutar with the highest civilian award of the state was taken unanimously by a committee headed by him on March 12.
“He is a centenarian but is still working on the Ambedkar statue at the Indu mill memorial project in Mumbai,” he said.
The award comprises Rs 25 lakh and a memento.
Who Is Ram Sutar?
Ram Sutar was born on February 9, 1925 in Gondur village of Dhulia district in Maharashtra. Earlier, he was mentored by Shriram Krishna Joshi and was later enrolled at Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay.
In 1959, Sutar shited to Delhi and worked in the information and broadcasting ministry. He, however, soon quit his job and started a career as a freelance sculptor.
In 1990, Sutar opened a studio in Delhi's Laxmi Nagar and shifted to Noida. He later founded his studio and established a casting factory in Sahibabad in the year 2006.
A Look At Major Works Of Ram Sutar
Ram Sutar, who works with his Son Anil, has been associated with many major projects like the Statue of Unity, the 251-metre tall statue of Lord Ram at Ayodhya, 153-feet high statue of Lord Shiva in Bengaluru and a 100-feet tall statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at Moshi in Pune.
Other sculptures include the 10-feet-long bronze figure of Govind Ballabh Pant in Delhi, statue of Karpuri Thakur and Bihar Vibhuti Anugrah Narain Sinha in Bihar, among others.
