US Woman Found Chained To Tree In Maharashtra Forest, Police Recover Her Passport

The police rescued her, gave her first aid, and admitted her to a primary healthcare center in Sawantwadi taluka of Sindhudurg district.

A 50-year-old woman from the United States was found chained to a tree in a forest in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on Saturday. The woman was discovered by a shepherd with her leg chained to a tree who was screaming for help in a forest near Sonurli village.

He then quickly informed the police, who came to rescue the American national. The woman has been identified as Lalita Kayi Kumar S, who lives in Tamil Nadu and originally belongs to the US.

She was found chained to a tree in a forest by her husband over a domestic dispute.

As per a report of India Today, the police rescued her, gave her first aid and admitted her to a primary healthcare center in Sawantwadi taluka of Sindhudurg district. Later, she was referred to a more advanced medical facility in Oros, Sindhudurg, after receiving primary treatment.

Probe Launched

Doctors who were treating the woman reported that she appeared to have psychiatric issues and communicated by writing about her health problems on a piece of paper. A video from the hospital showed her writing about her condition, stating she had been without food for 40 days and that her husband had chained her in the forest following a quarrel.

Speaking to the media, a Maharashtra Police official said that no FIR has been registered in connection with the matter yet, but a probe has been launched.

The woman is weak as she has not eaten anything for a couple of days and also as the area experienced heavy rains. We don't know for how long she was tied to that tree. She reportedly left her husband after a quarrel with her husband," The official added.
