A suspected rabid dog unleashed a series of attacks in Kannur’s Chakkarakkal area on Thursday, biting more than 30 people across a five-kilometer radius. The victims, including children, a school bus driver, and even a boy inside his home, sustained injuries to their hands, legs, head, and hips, as per reports.
Despite the severity of the attacks, local panchayat authorities have yet to capture the dog, sparking panic and frustration among residents, reported Mathrubhumi.
Wave of Attacks Across Multiple Locations
The dog reportedly roamed through Iruveri, Kulam Bazar, Punnacherry, and RV Metta, attacking people in various settings, as per Manorama. Victims included individuals waiting at bus stops, children playing outdoors, and even a boy inside his home. In one case, a father managed to fend off the animal using a cane.
A school bus driver, who was attacked while preparing his vehicle in the morning, reported that the dog had been aggressively roaming the area since dawn.
Despite the widespread panic, local officials have not taken immediate steps to capture or neutralize the threat. Manorama News reported that victims are receiving medical treatment, but the absence of official intervention has raised serious concerns about further attacks.
Medical Response For Rabies Risk
Rabies, a deadly viral disease, requires immediate medical attention. Experts advise that those bitten by a potentially rabid dog should follow these crucial steps: Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes to reduce the risk of infection. Applying iodine or alcohol-based antiseptics can further minimize infection risks. Rabies vaccines and tetanus shots should be administered promptly.
Early signs of rabies include fever, headache, agitation, and difficulty swallowing. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. Healthcare professionals stress that immediate medical attention is critical, and individuals should not wait for symptoms before seeking treatment.
