Earthquake In Kerala: Mild Tremors Felt In Kasaragod’s High-Range Areas

Villarikkund police officials stated that villagers reported feeling the tremors and hearing unusual sounds emanating from beneath the ground.

Kasaragod Earthquake: The residents in the high-range areas of northern Kasaragod district reported experiencing mild tremors in the early hours of Saturday. The tremors, which lasted for a few seconds, were felt in Malom, Rajapuram, Konnakkad, and nearby regions, according to the police, news agency PTI reported.

Quoting Villarikkund police officials, the report said that villagers reported feeling the tremors and hearing unusual sounds emanating from beneath the ground. Some residents claimed that their phones fell off tables and cots shook due to the impact. Authorities have assured that officials from the district administration will soon visit the affected areas for a detailed assessment.

The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale, and it occured around 1.30 am,the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said. A statement issued by KSDMA said the epicentre was in the Arabian Sea, and that a "shallow event" might have caused the tremors in Kasaragod.

This incident comes less than a year after similar tremors were reported in Kerala’s Wayanad district. On August 9, 2024, mild tremors were felt in several localities of Meppadi panchayat, a region that was then affected by landslides. Residents in Anappara, Thazhathuvayalil, Pinangodu, and Nenmeni villages reported vibrations, prompting authorities to advise evacuations, reported The Hindu. Schools in the region were also closed early as a precautionary measure.

Following the Wayanad tremors, reports of underground sounds and slight tremors emerged from parts of Palakkad and Kozhikode districts, reported Mathrubhumi. Residents in Ottappalam and Edappal reported hearing loud noises from beneath the ground around 10:30 am on the same day.

The recurring tremors in Kerala have raised concerns among locals and authorities alike. While no significant damage or injuries have been reported so far, the incidents have prompted calls for increased monitoring and preparedness in vulnerable areas.
