Kerala Govt Accuses Tamil Nadu Of Releasing Mullaperiyar Dam Water Without Warning, Plans To Raise Issue With CWC

Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine said presently there is no cause for concern but still Kerala government will register its opposition to Central Water Commission.

Chennai: The towns and villages downstream of Mullaperiyar Dam were put to suffer on early Tuesday after Tamil Nadu government reportedly released over 5,000 cusecs of water into Periyar river from Mullaperiyar reservoir after it reached the rule of the curve of 142 ft on Monday night. 

According to a report on The Hindu, the Kerala government accused Tamil Nadu government of failing to provide sufficient warning despite knowing that the rescue works could take a hit during the late hours. 

However, the Tamil Nadu government by Tuesday reportedly released water from nine shutters of 13 spillway shutters. Tamil Nadu government released water from the dam after the water level increased to 141.90 ft and neared the rule curve of 142 ft due to the rainfall in catchment areas.

Hence, overall water released by Tamil Nadu stood at 5,962 cusecs reportedly without much warning. The water release was the highest for the year from Mullaperiyar. 

On Tuesday, Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine said presently there is no cause for concern but still the Kerala government will register its opposition to Central Water Commission and Tamil Nadu government so that such incidents are avoided in the future.

The Minister also highlighted that rescue operations will take a hit due to the water released by midnight. He also requested the Tamil Nadu government to plan and then release water from the reservoir during the daytime.
