The constable who was on night patrol allegedly stopped the couple and intercepted them on Saturday while they were returning from a cinema

Chennai: A police constable of Thilagar Thidal police station in Madurai was arrested by the police on Monday for allegedly raping a 28-year-old woman. The incident took place on Saturday when the woman was returning home along with her male employer and they were intercepted by the constable who was on night patrol.

The two were reportedly returning after watching a cinema.

According to a report in The Hindu, constable Murugan from Thilagar Thidal police station was on a two-wheeler patrol duty when he saw the man and the woman coming on a two-wheeler. He stopped the two. As the duo reportedly gave contradictory statements, the constable came to the conclusion that they were not married.

The constable also said that he would drop the woman home. However, once the employer left the place, Murugan took the woman to a lodge and raped her, according to the report. Later, he sent her home in an auto.

After the employer came to know about the incident, he along with the woman lodged a complaint with the city police and a case was registered at the All Woman Police Station (South).

Following this, the constable has been arrested and remanded in custody.
