Karnataka Teacher Ends Life Over 'Harassment By Microfinance Staff'

A woman teacher ended her own life by jumping into a river allegedly due to relentless harassment by microfinance company staff in Karnataka's Davanagere district. The woman, Pushpalatha, went missing on January 26 and was found dead on Tuesday. 

Pushpalatha, a resident of Honnalli, and her husband Halesh, both teachers, had taken a loan from a microfinance company in Shivamogga. Unable to pay the final instalment of their loan EMI, the couple faced constant harassment from the company's staff, as per a report on IANS.

The microfinance staff allegedly visited their home and even Pushpalatha’s school to pressure her for repayment. They also filed a police complaint against the couple summoning them to the station. This persistent harassment left Pushpalatha deeply distressed.

On January 26, after attending Republic Day celebrations, Pushpalatha went to the Raghavendra Mutt, where CCTV footage showed her sitting by the riverbank, appearing lost in thought. Her bag and mobile phone were later found near the mutt, prompting authorities to launch a search operation. Her body was discovered about one kilometre downstream, as per the report.

In a related case, a man named Syed Samiulla from Tumakuru district reportedly died of a heart attack, which his family attributes to harassment by microfinance staff. Samiulla had taken a loan of Rs 4.66 lakh in 2019 and repaid Rs 7.20 lakh by 2024. Despite this, the staff allegedly continued to demand repayment, claiming the amount paid was entirely counted as interest.

Samiulla’s wife, Tabassum Banu, has appealed for help, stating that the harassment has now shifted to her, putting her and her children under immense stress. She fears the ongoing pressure could drive them to suicide.

These incidents have brought attention to the aggressive recovery practices of microfinance companies. The teacher's death also comes as Karnataka State Commissioner for Women, Nagalakshmi Chowdhary, speaking to The New Indian Express recently, urged district administrations to form vigilance committees to to track on microfinance firms and help victims.
