According to the complaint, the youth, known to the victim and with a history of conflicts, followed her and attempted to express his feelings before the crime incident.
A college student in Puttur town was reportedly stabbed by a fellow student leaving her with a hand injury on Tuesday. The injured girl was quickly taken to the local government hospital for treatment. Puttur police responded swiftly to the incident and reviewed CCTV footage to identify the suspect, who was then taken into custody.
According to the complaint, the youth, known to the victim and with a history of conflicts, followed her and attempted to express his feelings. When she refused, he allegedly became enraged and stabbed her hand with a sharp object before fleeing, according to a report on Daiji World.
The injured girl was treated at Puttur government hospital. A case has been registered at the Dakshina Kannada women’s police station under FIR No 42/2024, citing sections 78, 126(2), 118(1), and 238 of the BNS 2023 Act, along with Section 12 of the POCSO Act. The investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack as the reason for the stabbing remains unknown. Police noted that the suspect appeared to be in a state of shock following the incident, according to a report on PTI.
As news of the stabbing spread, a large group of people from the girl's community gathered at the college and the hospital, leading to rising tensions in parts of the town. Additionally, there were claims that the college administration initially pressured the girl to report that a glass injury was responsible for her wound.
To prevent further unrest, Puttur police intervened and dispersed the crowd that had gathered at both the college and the hospital. The situation is being closely monitored by the authorities to ensure no further disturbances occur.
The attack comes in the wake of several protests after the murder of a student Neha Hiremath, daughter of a corporator, in her college premises in Huballi.
