400 Kg Of Tomatoes Stolen, Maharashtra Farmer Approaches Police
A farmer in Maharashtra's Pune filed a complaint after he lost around 400 Kg of tomatoes to theft.
The rising prices of tomatoes have made the common kitchen ingredient a rare thing as people try to limit their consumption to manage their overall budget. Now, in a bizarre incident, a farmer from Maharashtra's Pune has approached the police alleging that his 400 kg of tomatoes have been stolen, PTI reported citing an official. The farmer told the police that he has lost nearly Rs 20,000 due to the theft. Notably, the kitchen staple is selling between Rs 100 and Rs 200 a kilo in several states. Complainant Arun Dhome told the police that he brought tomatoes to his home in Shirur tehsil in a vehicle with the help of labourers after harvesting them from his farm on Sunday, as per PTI.
He said that he had planned to sell the tomatoes in the market. However, he said, he found 20 crates of the precious vegetable weighing 400 kg missing when he woke up in the morning, PTI stated.
"After realising that his tomatoes had been stolen, Dhome approached the Shirur police station and lodged a complaint," the official was quoted as saying by PTI. According to the police, a case has been and an investigation is on.
Earlier it was reported that a farmer from the Pune district sold around 18,000 crates of tomatoes for Rs 3 crore.
Tomato prices have skyrocketed due to heavy rain in several parts of the country. In the retail market, they are selling between Rs 150-200 per kilogramme thus weighing heavily on people's finances, including restaurants and food manufacturers that rely on this versatile ingredient to a large extent. However, in a bizarre incident, a woman based in Dubai sent her mother 10 kilograms of tomatoes on her request.
A Twitter user sharing her Dubai-based sister's unusual gift to their mother in India wrote, "My sister is coming to India from Dubai for her children's summer holidays and she asked my mum if she wanted anything from Dubai and my mother said bring 10 kilos of tomatoes. And so now she has packed 10kg tomatoes in a suitcase and sent it."
