Winter Olympics 2022: India's Team Manager Tests Covid Positive Upon Arrival In Beijing

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra told PTI that chef de mission Harjinder is coordinating with winter Olympic organizers for a re-test.

New Delhi: In what comes as a major setback for India's Winter Olympics contingent, Indian team manager Mohammad Abbas Wani has tested Coronavirus positive. He has been isolated after testing positive for the dreaded infection upon arrival at the Beijing Airport, PTI reported. The Winter Olympics is slated to take place from February 4 to 20.

Abbas Wani is part of the six-member Indian delegation at the Winter Olympics. Jammu and Kashmir skier Arif Khan is India's only athlete to have qualified this time. During the games, he will compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events.

"I am in quarantine in my hotel room at Olympic village & have been asked to restrict my movement within the room only until the results of my 2nd Covid test. I am completely fine & asymptomatic," he tweeted.

The contingent also includes Harjinder Singh as its chef de mission, Ludar Chand Thakur as alpine coach, Puran Chand as technician and Roop Chand Negi as team official.

"The manager of the Indian contingent Mr. Abbas Wani tested COVID positive at Beijing Airport. The chef de mission Mr. Harjinder Singh is coordinating for a re-test.

"The athlete and his coach have been shifted to another flat to avoid any interaction," Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra told PTI.

Meanwhile, amidst the ongoing tension on the LAC, China on Wednesday invited People's Liberation Army Commander Qi Fabao, who was injured during a skirmish with the Indian Army in Galwan Valley, to be a torchbearer for the Games Torch Relay.
