New Delhi:  Indian cricket team's most successful Test captain, Virat Kohli on Saturday stunned everyone with his decision to retire as national team's captain for the longest format of the game. His decision to step down as Test skipper comes a day after team India lost the three-match Test series 2-1 against South Africa.

Virat ends his Test captaincy as Indian cricket team's most successful Test captain ever!

Virat Kohli has captained the national team in 68 Test matches. Under his captaincy, team India has won 40 matches and lost 17. He is so far tea India's most successful Test captain in International cricket. 

Virat Kohli finishes his Test captaincy as World's Number 4 most successful Test Captain

If India would have won their maiden Test series in South Africa under Virat's (40 Test wins) captaincy, he would have equalled Australian legend Steve Waugh's (41 Test wins) record in terms of wins as Test captain in international cricket.

Virat Kohli won his 40th Test in international cricket as team India's captain after beating Proteas in Ind vs SA 1st Test in Centurion. The captains who have won more Tests as captain in international cricket are Steve Waugh (41 Test wins), Ricky Ponting (48 Test wins) and Graeme Smith (53 Test wins).

Virat is the only Indian captain to win to win a Test match at South Africa's Centurion

Team India's hard-fought win in the series opener at Centurion made Virat Kohli the only Indian Test captain to win a Test match against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.
