Sports Fraternity Show Support To PM Modi’s ‘9pm-9mins’ Call By Lighting Lamps, Diyas

Days after the stupendous success of the 'Janata curfew', this was the Prime Minister's effort to infuse a sense of purpose to a population of more than 130 crore who should not lose hope amid rising cases of the pandemic.

New Delhi: The Indian sports fraternity on Sunday abided by PM Modi's call to switch off the lights and light candles and diyas at 9 pm for 9 minutes on Sunday to dispel the darkness and gloom brought by the outbreak of the deadly novel coronavirus. Days after the stupendous success of the 'Janata curfew', this was the Prime Minister's effort to infuse a sense of purpose to a population of more than 130 crore who should not lose hope amid rising cases of the pandemic. Millions came out in support of PM Modi’s ‘9pm-9mins’ call. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina took to twitter to post images with their families lighting lamps and candles on Sunday around 9pm. India skipper Virat Kohli shared a picture with is wife Anushka Sharma on Twitter, saying, "A prayer in unity does make a difference. Pray for every being and stand together." India opener Rohit Sharma also shared a picture on Instagram while lighting diyas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked athletes for showing their support towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Modi addressed the nation on Friday morning before interacting with a number of athletes. Post the interaction, the athletes tweeted their support in the fight against the novel disease. Earlier in the day, skipper Virat Kohli and limited-overs deputy Rohit Sharma had tweeted urging citizens to follow PM Modi's call to switch off all lights and light candles at 9 pm for nine minutes.
