The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Auction kicked off at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19 (Tuesday), witnessing robust investments from various franchises. Among the teams yet to secure an IPL title, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are making efforts to build a strong squad for the upcoming season. Despite having a near-complete first XI like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, PBKS are focused on filling crucial roles and fine-tuning their player acquisitions.

Harshal Patel emerged as the costliest Indian buy in the 2024 IPL auction, bagged by PBKS for Rs 11.75 crore. Gujarat Titans initiated the bidding at his base price of Rs 2 crore, later contested fiercely by Punjab Kings until Titans eventually withdrew.

Patel, a medium pacer who initially joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2012, showcased his breakthrough stint during his second season with RCB in 2021. He claimed the Purple Cap that season with 32 wickets in 15 games, followed by 19 wickets in 2022.

Punjab Kings also secured England all-rounder Chris Woakes for Rs. 4.20 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders initiated the bid, but PBKS persisted and successfully acquired the player. Woakes, absent from IPL action since 2021, brings significant value as a bowling all-rounder.
