IPL 2022 Format Explained: BCCI Adopts 2011 Like Formula. Teams To Be Divided Into Two Groups Of 5 | Check Details

IPL 2022: According to the new format, Chennai Super Kings will play two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore but only one against Kolkata Knight Riders. Know the details below.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Friday, announced that the 10 IPL teams will play 14 league matches each, like the previous editions. Each team will play five teams twice, while the remaining four teams only once.

To ensure this, the 10 teams will be divided into two virtual groups of five teams each. These groups were formed on the basis of a points system based on the number of IPL championships won and the number of final appearances. This is the same format that was adopted in the 2011 edition when 10 teams played the IPL.

The Two groups are as follows:

Group A  Group B
Mumbai Indians Chennai Super Kings
Kolkata Knight Riders  Sunrisers Hyderabad
Rajasthan Royals Royal Challengers Bangalore
Delhi Capitals Punjab Kings
Lucknow Super Giants Gujarat Titans

IPL New Format Explained:

The teams are divided into the above two groups. Each team will play twice against the teams in their own group and also will play twice against the team in the same row from the other group. Teams will play one match against the remaining four teams in the other group.

To make it simpler, take Mumbai Indians' example: MI will play twice in the league stages against KKR, RR, DC, LSG, and CSK (the team in the same row in the other group). MI will play only once against SRH, RCB, PBKS, and GT.

These changes were announced by the BCCI after an IPL Governing Council meeting on Friday.

The tournament will begin on March 26, 2022 and the final will be played on May 29, 2022.  A total of 70 league matches will be played across four international standard venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venue for the playoff matches will be decided later.
