Manchester United Confirms Cristiano Ronaldo's Exit With 'Immediate Effect'

The expected move from Manchester United comes after Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo had lambasted the club and boss Erik ten Hag for 'betraying' him.

Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect, the club confirmed in an official statement, Tuesday. The move comes after the Portuguese player had lambasted the club and boss Erik ten Hag for 'betraying' him in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

"The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

"Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch," Manchester United said in an official statement.

Cristiano Ronaldo's statement after ending ties with Manchester United: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early," Ronaldo said. "I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge."

Cristiano Ronaldo's bombshell interview

Speaking to Piers Morgan on TalkTV in an interview, Ronaldo said he felt betrayed that some people at Manchester United were trying to force him out and that he has no respect for Ten Hag.

"Yes, not only the coach, but another two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed," said Ronaldo, when asked whether United's hierarchy was trying to push him out of the club. "Yes, I feel betrayed, and I felt some people don't want me here, not just this year, but last year too," the Portuguese said.
