At least six people have been feared dead and nine others have been injured after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea off the Egypt coast on Thursday.
The submarine was carrying over 40 passengers for an underwater tour of the coral reefs off Hurghada, as per reports.
Associated Press, citing Egyptian officials said that six foreigners, whose nationalities are still unknown, died in the accident. The cause of sinking was not immediately clear after the incident.
According to The National, 29 people have been rescused, while the nine injured are in critical condition. The incident occured when the submarine, sailing off one of the beaches in the tourist promenade area, sank in front of the marina of a well-known hotel in Hurghada.
This is not the first incident involving tourist boats in the Egyptian city. Earlier in November last year, a tourist boat called the Sea Story sank, killing 11 people.
The Sindbad submarine, which is involved in the incident, takes 42 tourists to a ride 25 metres below the sea, as per its website. It further claims to offer tourists breath-taking views in the air-conditioned comfort offering 500 metres of coral reef and its marine inhabitants.
