WATCH: David Warner Becomes Second Australian To Score A Century In 100th Test Match, Gets To The Landmark With A Boundary

David Warner ended a streak of 27 innings without a Test ton.

While David Warner had not scored a century in Test match cricket since 2020, the left-handed batter chose quite an occasion to get to his hundred when he notched up a ton in his 100th Test. The 36-year-old achieved the feat during Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test match against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

The Aussie opener thus became only the second Australian to score a hundred in his 100th Test after former captain Ricky Ponting who had also achieved the feat against the same opposition back in 2006. Ponting went on to score a century in both innings of his 100th Test match which was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

It was an emotional moment for the batter who hadn't been in the best of forms with a poor 2022 coming into this Test match. As soon as the southpaw reached his 25th Test match hundred, he leaped and pumped the air with his wife Candice also present at the stands. Even Warner's spouse became emotional as the New South Wales cricketer ended a streak of 27 innings without a Test ton.

Warner Becomes 10th Batter to Get to a 100 in 100th Test

Meanwhile, Warner became the 10th Batter to get to a 100 in the 100th Test match. Prior to him only, Colin Cowdrey,  Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, Alex Stewart, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Joe Root had managed to do the same.

Having made his Test debut in 2011, Warner surpassed the 8000-run tally during this innings, becoming the eight Australian to do so. With 25 centuries in the purest form of the game, he finds himself fifth on the list of openers with most hundreds. Only Sunil Gavaskar (33), Alastair Cook (31), Matthew Hayden (30) and Graeme Smith (27) have scored more hundreds than Warner as an opener in this format.
