Shikhar Dhawan Likely To Be India's Captain For Sri Lanka Series

In the absence of many key players, Shikhar Dhawan will lead the Indian team in 3 ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka. Although there has been no announcement regarding the same, it is expected that the players who performed well in the IPL could get a chance in the team.

New Delhi: India and Delhi Capitals opening batsman, Shikhar Dhawan could lead an India side in the ODI and T20I tour of Sri Lanka in July as the Indian cricket board looks to form a white-ball squad in the absence of top players who will be busy in England for Test matches at the time. The news agency IANS reported.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prithvi Shaw, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan could be in the ODI and T20I squad for the series starting July 13. There is no official announcement from the BCCI on the entire India vs Sri Lanka series, but BCCI President Sourav Ganguly in an interview revealed that India will be touring Sri Lanks for a 5 match T20I and 3 matches ODI series.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who both did well for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, and also in the white-ball series against England at home, could be in the squad.

It is expected that the players who performed well in the IPL could get a chance in the team. Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Chahar brothers, and the Pandya brothers are the other players who could be part of the squad. Royal Challengers Bangalore's Karnataka opener Devdutt Padikkal is likely to be one of the three openers India will travel with besides Dhawan and Shaw.

Shikhar Dhawan, the probable captain had a good Indian Premier League. He was the high scorer of the tournament with 380 runs at an average of  54.38. He would be accompanied by Prithvi Shaw at the top of the order.

A 20-member India side under Virat Kohli will be traveling to England soon for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand and a five-Test series against England. The BCCI has come up with the plan of playing with two teams, one specific to the Tests and the other to the limited-overs format. It will be interesting to see whether it is just because of the Covid-19 protocols or will it be a permanent thing?
