Shane Warne's 7-Year-Old Tweet On Travis Head Resurfaces After Batter's Match-Winning Ton In World Cup Final

Travis Head's exceptional 137-run innings in the final against India made a profound impact, securing Australia's sixth ODI World Cup title.

Even after his passing, cricket legend Shane Warne's foresight shines through a seven-year-old tweet predicting Travis Head's future prominence in Australian cricket, gaining attention following Australia's victory in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final against India on November 19 (Sunday). Australia secured a six-wicket win over India at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, chasing down a target of 241 runs in 43 overs.

In his tweet from December 6, 2016, Warne expressed his admiration for Travis Head, highlighting the cricketer's potential to become a future star across all cricket formats for Australia.

“I'm a big fan of Travis Head as a cricketer, I believe he will be a future star for Australia in all forms of the game @wwos !!,” reads Warne’s Tweet from 2016.

Contrasting Starts For India and Australia In World Cup 2023

Coming to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Final, India began their innings strongly, led by Rohit Sharma's contributions, but the momentum slowed after his dismissal. Despite half-centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, the scoring rate declined in the middle overs, limiting India to a total of 240 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

Australia faced early setbacks, being 47/3 in 7 overs but Travis Head's partnership with Marnus Labuschagne, amounting to 192 runs, shifted the game. Head's exceptional 137-run innings in the final made a profound impact, securing Australia's sixth ODI World Cup title. He became only the third Australian and the seventh overall to score a century in an ODI World Cup final, earning the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance.

Despite missing the initial five matches of the World Cup 2023 due to injury, Head made a remarkable ODI World Cup debut by scoring a century against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 28.

Ahead of the final against India, Head emerged as the top run-scorer for Australia in the semi-final against South Africa as well, earning the Player of the Match award by scoring 62 runs off 48 balls at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. By winning the Player of the Match award in both the semi-final and final matches of the ODI World Cup, Head joins an elite group comprising Mohinder Amarnath (1983), Aravinda de Silva (1996), and Shane Warne (1999) in ODI World Cup history.
