Mohammed Shami charged with domestic violence and sexual harassment
The formal charges, filed in an Alipore court, comes around a year after Shami's wife Hasin Jahan filed a police complaint levelling multiple allegations against the cricketer and his family.
9 days before IPL 2019, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami received a massive setback after the Kolkata Police filed a formal charge-sheet in the case of domestic violence and sexual harassment against him.
The formal charges, filed in an Alipore court, comes around a year after Shami's wife Hasin Jahan filed a police complaint levelling multiple allegations against the cricketer and his family.
"I have been told that police have submitted the charge-sheet mentioning IPC sections 498A (domestic violence) and 354A (sexual harassment)," Jahan told the media.
Jahan's lawyer Zakir Hussain informed that the police appeared to have filed charges under two counts.
Shami's lawyer Salim Rahaman said they will respond soon, adding that the police had dropped three of the main allegations, including of rape by Shami's elder brother rape, attempt to murder and physical assault.
"The only two sections slapped against my client are that of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Let summons be issued against us and we will also respond accordingly," Rahaman said.
12 months ago, Shami's wife Hasin Jahan accused him of adultery, domestic violence and sexual harassment. Jahan even accused Shami of match-fixing. The 29-year-old right-arm pacer's central contract with the BCCI was put on hold but after an investigation, the board clear him and Shami made a roaring comeback to international cricket in India's England tour.
Shami also emerged as the ODI Player of the Series in New Zealand and booked his spot for World Cup 2019. He played four of the five ODIs in the recently-concluded series against Australia, which India lost despite taking a 2-0 lead.
After being released by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Shami was picked up for a whopping 4.80 crores by Kings XI Punjab in the IPL 2019 auctions.
