Glenn Maxwell sent a timely reminder to the Australian selectors by slamming a sparkling double century in the Sheffield Shield match against the mighty New South Whales.

Maxwell, who was called up as Warner’s back up was not required as the dashing opener was declared fit to take the field in the Ashes opener at Gabba. The Australian team management decided to let Maxwell go to take part in the Shield match, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the all-rounder, who smashed and unbeaten 213 off 260 balls batting at No. 3.

Maxwell’s innings took Victoria to a commanding position as the went to stumps at 365 for 3 after opting to bat first and moreover it put him as the frontrunner for a spot in the Australian middle order if there is any slip up from the likes of Shaun Marsh. However, Marsh also did his reputation no harm by playing a crucial knock to bail Australia out of trouble late in the second Day of Ashes.

Maxwell’s effort, which included 27 fours and 3 sixes, was also the highest individual score at the North Sydney Oval. Keeping his all-rounder abilities mind, Maxwell is sure to be a contender when the Ashes moves to the business end.
