Mexican Open: Rafael Nadal Defeats Taylor Fritz To Complete Acapulco Hat-trick
Nadal moved to 20-2 in Acapulco, joining David Ferrer and Thomas Muster as the only players to win at least three singles titles at this event.
World No.2 and top seed Rafael Nadal won his third title at the ATP 500 Mexican Open after securing a resounding win over his American opponent Taylor Fritz in the finals played at Saturday.
The 33-year old Spaniard was too good for his unseeded American opponent as he won the title clash with relative ease in straight sets with the scoreline reading 6-3,6-2.
Nadal moved to 20-2 in Acapulco, joining David Ferrer and Thomas Muster as the only players to win at least three singles titles at this event. Rafael Nadal’s first two titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC (2005, 2013) were clinched on red clay.
”I couldn’t be happier. I played a great event from the beginning to the end,” Nadal said. “Acapulco was the first big title that I won in my career, so to be able to stay here after 15 years is amazing. I can’t thank enough the people who make me feel at home every single time." Nadal's third title at Acapulco took his ATP tour titles tally to a staggering 85. Nadal won his first title of the season after finishing second best to Novak Djokovic in the men's singles finals at the Australian Open. Only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94) have won more ATP Tour titles than Nadal's 85 in the Open Era. Despite the loss, Fritz can be pleased with reaching his fifth ATP Tour final (1-4) and his first at an ATP 500 event. He and 2017 champion Sam Querrey are the only Americans to reach the singles final in tournament history. The 22-year-old will move to a new career-high FedEx ATP Ranking of No. 24 on Monday. In the women's final, seventh seeded Heather Watson captured her first WTA title in three years by grinding out a 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1 win over Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez.History maker. ????????@RafaelNadal ????????#AMT2020 #CelebratingTennis @atptour @ATPTour_ES pic.twitter.com/UN47Iu49YP
