Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on Nirjala Ekadashi, seeking blessings for a prosperous life and the removal of obstacles.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Nirjala Ekadashi holds immense significance in Hinduism and is regarded as the most important among the 24 Ekadashi fasts observed annually. According to scriptures, observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast bestows the merits of all 24 Ekadashi fasts. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on this sacred day, seeking blessings for a prosperous life and the removal of obstacles.
When Is Nirjala Ekadashi 2025?
As per the Hindu Panchang, the Ekadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha will begin at 2:15 AM on June 6, 2025, and end at 4:47 AM on June 7, 2025. Since the tithi begins before sunrise on June 6, the fast will be observed on that day based on the Udaya Tithi (sunrise rule).
- Smarta Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat: Friday, June 6, 2025
- Vaishnava Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat: Saturday, June 7, 2025
This year, the Ekadashi fast will be observed on two different days due to the overlap of tithis. On June 6, householders (Smarta sect) will observe the fast, while saints and followers of the Vaishnava tradition will observe it on June 7.
The Importance Of Nirjala Ekadashi
According to the Skanda Purana (Vishnu Khand, Ekadashi Mahatmya chapter), this day is believed to grant the fruits of all other Ekadashis. The day is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to shower divine blessings upon those who undertake this stringent fast.
The term ‘Nirjala’ means 'without water'. On this day, devotees observe a complete fast without consuming even a drop of water. Fasting in the month of Jyeshtha without water is considered an act of great devotion and spiritual strength.
The Legend Of Bhima And Nirjala Ekadashi
This Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi after the Mahabharata character Bhima, who was known for his immense appetite. As he found it difficult to observe all the Ekadashi fasts, he was advised by sages to observe just Nirjala Ekadashi with complete dedication. By keeping this one fast, he attained the benefits of all other Ekadashis and was granted liberation (moksha).
Special Yogas On Nirjala Ekadashi 2025
This year, several auspicious yogas coincide with Nirjala Ekadashi:

Tulsi Worship On Nirjala Ekadashi
Tulsi (holy basil) worship is an age-old practice in Hindu households. On Ekadashi, especially Nirjala Ekadashi, Tulsi is offered to Lord Vishnu as it is believed to be very dear to him. Tulsi is also regarded as a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. It is said that homes where Tulsi is worshipped are blessed with divine energies.
However, one should not offer water to the Tulsi plant on this day, as she too observes the Nirjala fast. Also, avoid offering rice (Akshat) to Lord Vishnu, as it is forbidden in Ekadashi rituals.
