Karwa Chauth will take place on October 20. As per the Drik Panchang, the Chaturthi Tithi starts at 6:46 AM and concludes at 4:16 AM on October 21. The ideal time for the Karwa Chauth Puja is between 5:46 PM and 7:02 PM, spanning 1 hour and 16 minutes. Women will commence their fast at 6:25 AM, breaking it after moonrise, which is expected at 7:54 PM.

Historical Significance Of Karwa Chauth

The festival of Karwa Chauth is deeply rooted in folklore, with the story of Queen Veeravati being one of the most famous. On her first Karwa Chauth, Queen Veeravati fainted from hunger and mistakenly broke her fast early, which resulted in her husband’s untimely death. Heartbroken, she turned to Goddess Parvati, who blessed her with the strength to complete her fast again. Her devotion brought her husband back to life, showcasing the power of love and faith.

Another prominent legend comes from the Mahabharata. Draupadi, in her time of need during Arjuna’s absence, sought guidance from Lord Krishna. He suggested that she observe a rigorous fast in the way Goddess Parvati did. Draupadi followed his advice, and eventually, Arjuna returned safely.

Rituals Associated With Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth includes a series of meaningful rituals that women observe with devotion. The day starts with the Sankalp, a sacred vow where women commit to fasting for their husbands' well-being and long life. Before dawn, they enjoy a traditional meal called Sargi, provided by their mothers-in-law, which helps sustain them throughout the day.

As the evening draws near, women don traditional outfits and often adorn their hands with henna. The Puja takes place during the evening, typically at twilight, where women come together to offer prayers and show devotion to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

The fast is concluded after the moon is spotted. Women recite sacred mantras, asking for blessings for their husbands and families. After completing the rituals, they give away the karwa, filled with water or milk, to a Brahmin or another married woman, symbolizing an act of charity and thankfulness.
