Dhanteras, celebrated just before Diwali, is a significant festival that holds great importance in Hindu traditions. Know who is dhanvantri and why he is worshipped on this auspicious day.

Dhanteras 2024: The festival of Diwali is a five-day celebration, beginning with the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, which is also known as Dhantrayodashi. On this day, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi (Maa Laxmi) and Lord Kuber (Kuber Dev) for wealth and prosperity. Additionally, the worship of Lord Dhanvantari holds special significance on this day.

According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the month of Kartik. On this day, people traditionally make purchases, regardless of their means. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 29, and Diwali will follow on October 31, 2024.

Who Is Dhanvantari?

As per religious scriptures, Lord Dhanvantari emerged during the great churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). According to ancient lore, it was Dhanvantari who brought forth the pot of Amrit (nectar of immortality) during the churning. He is regarded as the god of Ayurveda and the divine physician of the gods. Dhanvantari is believed to bestow health and cure illnesses, which is why he is revered as a deity who promotes well-being and vitality. A question arises: If Dhanvantari is associated with health, why is he worshiped on Dhanteras, a day linked to wealth?

Why Is Dhanvantari Worshiped On Dhanteras?

According to Hindu Mythology, the churning of the ocean was undertaken by gods and demons to obtain the pot of Amrit. A total of 14 treasures emerged during the Samudra Manthan, with the pot of Amrit being the last and most significant. It was Lord Dhanvantari who appeared with the pot on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. Hence, Dhanvantari is worshiped on Dhanteras. The day is also celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti to honor his appearance on this auspicious date.
