Chaturmas 2025 Begins From July 6 — Auspicious Ceremonies To Be On Hold For Four Months

It is believed that undertaking auspicious tasks during Chaturmas does not lead to success and may invite hardships throughout life.

With the onset of Devshayani Ekadashi, auspicious activities such as weddings, housewarmings, and other religious rituals will be suspended for the next four months. This period, known as Chaturmas, is considered inauspicious for conducting any kind of sacred or celebratory event. According to Hindu belief, this marks the sleeping period of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, who is said to reside in the netherworld (Patal Lok) during this time.

What Happens During Chaturmas?

It is believed that undertaking auspicious tasks during Chaturmas does not lead to success and may invite hardships throughout life. Therefore, people refrain from performing weddings, mundan (head-shaving ceremonies), or housewarming rituals. According to astrology, planetary positions during Chaturmas are often unfavorable, with Guru (Jupiter) or Shukra (Venus)—both planets associated with marital harmony and prosperity—being in a non-beneficial (set) state.

When Will Chaturmas Begin And End In 2025?

This year, Chaturmas will begin on July 6, 2025, following Devshayani Ekadashi, and will continue for four months. The period will come to an end on November 1, 2025, coinciding with Devuthani Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. From this date onwards, all auspicious and religious activities may resume.

When Will Auspicious Ceremonies Resume?

The day following Chaturmas, November 2, 2025, marks Tulsi Vivah, an extremely sacred day for performing weddings. The resumption of auspicious ceremonies, especially marriages, begins on this day and is considered highly fruitful.

Why Are Weddings Not Performed During Chaturmas?

Hindu scriptures suggest that during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu enters a state of yogic slumber. Since he is considered the divine witness and preserver of the universe, his absence means auspicious events do not receive divine blessings. Additionally, astrological reasons such as the unfavorable position of Venus and Jupiter during this time are believed to hinder marital harmony and prosperity.
