As Team India gears up for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19), here is a look at the number of heart-breaking defeats that they have faced against the same opponents in ODI World Cups over the years. Even in India's successful 1983 World Cup campaign, the Kapil Dev-led side faced a defeat to Australia in a group-stage fixture. Australia scored 320/9 in 60 overs riding on a 110 from Trevor Chappell. In response, India were bowled out for 158. In the 1987 edition of the Cricket World Cup, India came agonizingly close to Australia's total of 270 runs before falling short by a run in Chennai. Geoff Marsh scored a century for Australia and was adjudged the Player of the Match. Perhaps the most heartbreaking defeat to Australia in an ODI World Cup, came in the finals of the 2003 edition of the tournament in South Africa. India had won eight matches in a row under Sourav Ganguly, a record streak which was broken only in 2023 by the team under Rohit Sharma. However, they lost to Australia twice in the tournament, once in the group stage and once in the summit clash. Australia absolutely bossed the final, making 359/2 in 50 overs with captain Ricky Ponting scoring 140 off 121.
