Google Pay is preparing to introduce an innovative AI feature that will allow users to make UPI payments using voice commands, eliminating the need for manual typing. This AI-powered functionality aims to enhance the user experience and provide added convenience. Sharat Bulusu, the Lead Product Manager of Google Pay in India, highlighted that this voice feature will streamline the digital payment process.
Although full details about the AI voice feature have not been disclosed, it holds the potential to transform how we make digital payments.
When Will This Feature Launch?
The new AI feature is expected to be especially beneficial for millions of Google Pay users in India, particularly those who may face literacy challenges. By enabling voice-based transactions, it will make digital payments more accessible and user-friendly. Reports suggest that users will be able to complete their transactions simply by issuing voice commands. However, Google has yet to announce when this feature will officially launch.
This development is a collaborative effort between Google and the Union Government, forming part of the Bhashini AI project, which aims to enable payments in local languages.
In addition, Google is focusing on machine learning and AI technologies to tackle the rising issue of cyber fraud in India. The new AI feature is expected to play a key role in protecting users from online scams and other digital threats.
In the Indian UPI payment market, PhonePe and Google Pay remain the leading platforms. According to a report from November 2024, Google Pay holds a 37% share of total UPI transactions, while PhonePe leads with 47.8%. Together, these two platforms account for over 80% of the UPI market share in India.
