The G20 started in 1999 as a meeting for finance ministers and central bank governors, but has since expanded into a yearly summit attended by the heads of state and government. Furthermore, Sherpa meetings (charged with carrying out discussions and creating consensus among Leaders), working groups, and special events are held throughout the year.
