Manipur Violence: Stand-Off Ends In Imphal East's Itham. PM Monitoring Situation, Says Shah — Top Points

Amit Shah on Saturday told an all-party meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been continuously monitoring the situation in strife-torn Manipur.

Stand-off between a mob led by women and security forces came to an end after the Army took a “mature decision” to not risk civilians and left with seized weapons and ammunition, officials said on Sunday. The stand-off stemmed after a dozen members of KYKL militant group were hiding in Imphal East’s Itham village following which the security forces had cordoned off the area. Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday told an all-party meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been continuously monitoring the situation in strife-torn Manipur, as per PTI report.

Shah also told the meeting that the situation in the north eastern state was slowly returning to normal and not a single person has died since June 13 in the violence.

Here are the top points on the situation in Manipur.

  • An operation was launched in Itham village on Saturday by security forces acting on specific intelligence and 12 members of Meitei militant group, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) were apprehended along with arms, ammunition and war-like stores, the Army said.
  • KYKL was also involved in a number of attacks, including the ambush of a 6 Dogra unit in 2015, they said.
  • Among those holed up in the village was self-styled Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba alias Uttam, a wanted terrorist who may have been the mastermind of the Dogra ambush tragedy, officials said.
  • In an all-party meeting on Saturday in Delhi, Amit Shah told that PM Modi has been monitoring the situation since day one and "guiding us with full sensitivity" to find a solution to the problem.
  • Convening the meeting, Shah sought the cooperation of all the political parties to help defuse the situation and restore peace and trust among various communities in Manipur at the earliest.
  • The Modi government is committed to solve the Manipur problem by taking everyone together, Shah said at the meeting, reported PTI quoting sources.
