Manipur Schools Set To Reopen Today For Classes 1 To 8 Two Months After Violence
Schools for classes 1 to 8 are all set to open from today in Manipur which were closed since the violence broke out in the state in May.
After over two months of unrest in Manipur, schools for classes 1 to 8 are all set to open from Wednesday, as per the order of CM N Biren Singh. The Manipur government on Monday had announced the opening of schools for these classes from July 5, which were closed since caste clashes broke out in the state in the first week of May. During a press conference, Singh had said that bunkers set up in the hill and valley districts would be removed, while additional state forces would be deployed to provide security to farmers from both the Meitei and Kuki communities so that agricultural activities could begin.
Speaking about the security situation, Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated: "The government has decided to deploy more security personnel in five districts," ANI reported.
Manipur police on Monday issued an official statement, stating that the situation is tense in some places with sporadic incidents of firing and congregation of unruly mob in the last 24 hours, news agency ANI reported.
State police and central troops undertook a 24-hour search operation in vulnerable and periphery regions in both hill and valley districts, according to the statement.
"Intermittent firing between armed miscreants was reported in the intervening night of 01.07.2023 and 02.07.2023 at the adjoining villages of Chinglangmei & Langza, Samulamlam Block, Churachandpur District. During the incident one person was reported to be dead and another person was injured. Operation was launched immediately by security forces and the armed miscreants were repelled," reads the official statement.
On Tuesday, a mob tried to loot weapons from an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Khangabok in the Thoubal district of Manipur which was thwarted by Security Forces. The Spear Corps of the Indian Army said that one rioter was killed while a few others were injured during the failed attempt. It said that the mob had also laid road blocks to prevent the movement of reinforcements. However, situation was brought under control with the help of additional columns of Assam Rifles and Rapid Action Force.
