Yamaha Discontinues YZF-R15 V2.0

The Japanese bike manufacturer has pulled the model off its website. Expect the YZF-R15S to follow suit soon

Yamaha Discontinues YZF-R15 V2.0

Yamaha India introduced the second-gen YZF-R15 way back in 2011 and the manufacturer continued offering it alongside the YZF-R15 V3.0, which was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo. However, now that the sales of the third-gen motorcycle is going strong, the company has decided to pull the plug on the YZF-R15 v2.0 by taking it off its website. The YZF-R15S, however, is still listed on the site. But it too is likely to be discontinued soon.

The Version 3.0 is a considerable improvement over the second-gen motorcycle both in terms of dynamics and features. The current generation motorcycle not only comes with a bigger, more technologically advanced motor, but also gets a major overhaul in terms of design. Drawing inspiration from the new-gen YZF-R1, the R15 V3 looks more compact, complete with LED headlamp and a full digital instrumentation. Recently, Yamaha also introduced the MotoGP Edition of the V3 at  premium of Rs 3,000 over the standard.

The Yamaha R15 V2’s 149cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected motor churns out 17PS at 8500rpm and 15Nm at 7500rpm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. This engine produces 2.3PS less than the new bike which features Variable Valve Actuation for better top-end power delivery. The R15S, on the other hand, is essentially the same as the Version 2.0, albeit with a single-piece seat for more comfortable ergonomics.

The R15S retails for Rs 1.15 lakhs while the Version 3.0 is around Rs 12,000 more expensive. They rival the Bajaj Pulsar RS 200 (Rs 1.26 lakh for non-ABS variant) and the KTM RC 200 (Rs 1.78 lakh). All prices are ex-showroom Delhi.
