A small plane with five people on board crashed in a rural area of upstate New York on Sunday afternoon, news agency Associated Press (AP) reported. The report said that the authorities were investigating the incident on Monday. The single-engine Piper PA-46 aircraft took off from Albert S. Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta and went down near the village of Sydney around 2 pm, as per the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The lake reportedly crashed into Lake Cecil, located in Delaware Country, New York. 

The current conditions of the five passengers on board remained unknown. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were jointly investigating the crash, the AP report said. 

Sarah Taylor Sulick, an NTSB spokesperson, said the plane was headed to Charleston, West Virginia when it crashed under unknown circumstances, the report said. 

It was also unclear whether the wreckage had been located or if there were any survivors. 

Numerous social media users reported witnessing the plane "go down". The Priority One Safety Team, a volunteer Emergency Response Team, provided an update on Facebook, a Times Now report said. 

"We are getting information at this time that there may be a commercial plane crash located in Delaware County, New York. We are currently watching air traffic and listening to the scanner feeds to determine where exactly it is. Crews are still currently searching for the searching for the aircraft and no reports of smoke at this time. A Command station is set up at Trout Creek Fire House located in Tout Creek, NY," the team said in the statement, as reported by Times Now.
