'Continue To Expect Accountability From Govt Of India': US On Washington Post Report About Pannun Plot

The Ministry of External Affairs had refuted the Washington Post report saying it made "unwarranted and unsubstantiated" imputations on a serious matter.

The United States said on Tuesday that it continues to expect accountability from the Government of India over the issue of an alleged assassination plot against Sikh extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. US Department of State Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel made the comments while responding to a media query over a report by the Washington Post revealing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "inner circle" was aware of the assassination plot.

"So we continue to expect accountability from the Government of India based on the results of the Indian inquiry committee's work, and we are regularly working with them and inquiring for additional updates," Patel said.

"We'll also continue to raise our concerns directly with the Indian government at senior levels...," he added.

On Tuesday, India refuted the Washington Post report saying it made "unwarranted and unsubstantiated" imputations on a serious matter.

"The report in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

"There is an ongoing investigation of the high-level committee set up by the Government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organised criminals, terrorists and others," he added.

"Speculative and irresponsible comments on it are not helpful," said the MEA spokesperson.

In November last year, the US federal prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with working with an employee of the Indian government in the foiled attempt to kill Pannun on American soil.

Pannun, who holds dual citizenship of the US and Canada, is wanted in India on terror charges.
