US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Husband Gets 5-Day Jail, Probation In Drink-Driving Crash

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation on Wednesday even as he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May car crash he caused in the Napa County city of Yountville. Napa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Solga informed news agency DPA that Paul will not serve any additional jail time after already serving two days and receiving conduct credit for two other days.

Meanwhile, Paul's attorney informed that the court ordered that former completes the day through the court work programme.

The accident took place in May when Pelosi was driving a 2021 Porsche and collided with a 2014 Jeep driven by a 48-year-old in Napa County, the California Highway Patrol.

Napa County district attorney's office said that Paul was arrested and administered a blood test that showed 0.082 per cent blood alcohol conten. However, Napa County Superior Court Judge dismissed the second charge against Pelosi for driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.082 per cent.

Paul has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.

Paul will work eight hours in the court's work program in lieu of the remaining day, Solga said during the hearing, which he did not attend. The court work program converts one day of jail into eight hours of community service.

Appart from the punishment, Paul will also have to provide $5,000 to the victim for medical bills and lost wages and nearly $2,000 in fines, news agency AFP reported. California Highway Patrol officers reported that Pelosi was "unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage."

Prosecutors filed the case as a misdemeanor because of injuries to the 48-year-old driver of the SUV.

Nancy Pelosi was recently in news for her controversial visit to Tiwan earlier this month, promting China to impose sanctions on Speaker of the US House of Representatives and her family members.

"In disregard of China's grave concerns and firm opposition, Pelosi insisted on visiting China's Taiwan region. This constitutes a gross interference in China's internal affairs," China's foreign minister said.

"In response to Pelosi's egregious provocation, China decides to adopt sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family members in accordance with relevant laws of the People's Republic of China," it added. Pelosi had visited the self-governing democratic island on August 2, prompting Beijing to launch air and sea military drills with live fire in the waters off Taiwan.
