The deaths took place when local residents tried to install Afghanistan's national flag at a square in the city, some 150 km to the east of Kabul, Reuters reported two witnesses and a former police official as saying.

There has, however, been no comment so far with regard to this incident from the Taliban spokesmen. This took place as the locals staged a protest in support of the country’s national flag.

“Protest in Jalalabad city in support of National flag. #Afghanistan,” Pajhwok Afghan News tweeted.

The initial reports suggested the locals removed a Taliban flag that was hoisted in place of the flag of the previous Afghan government at one of the roundabouts in the city
