Terrorism, North Korea, Ukraine & More: Modi, Albanese Express Shared Views On Global Concerns

In a joint statement, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation through Quad.

New Delhi: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday said that Australia looks forward to working closely with India to advance the Quad’s positive and practical agenda. He also invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Quad Summit to be held in May this year.

In a joint statement, the Prime Ministers reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation through Quad. India and Australia are both members of the Quad along with the US and Japan. They said they look forward to continuing to work together with Quad partners in the Indo-Pacific, to advance their shared vision for a region that is free, open, inclusive, and resilient, and to deliver on commitments from the 2022 Quad Leaders’ Summit. This includes health security, climate change, and energy transition, sustainable infrastructure, humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR), maritime security, and counter-terrorism.

The two countries also confirmed to support each other’s candidacies for non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India for the term 2028-2029 and Australia for the term 2029-2030.

The two Prime Ministers also vowed to work closely to take concerted action against globally proscribed terrorist entities and to contribute to the common fight against terrorism, including through combating terror financing.

Similarly, the two PMs condemned North Korea’s continued destabilising ballistic missile launches, which violate relevant UNSC resolutions. They urged North Korea to comply with its obligations under relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions (UNSCR). The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to the denuclearisation of North Korea.

Modi and Albanese expressed their deep concern at the deteriorating situation in Myanmar and further called for an immediate cessation of violence, as per the joint statement.

The Prime Ministers expressed concern about the conflict and humanitarian situation in Ukraine, reiterating the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. They reiterated that the conflict was causing immense human suffering, exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economic system.
