Russia: Two Astronauts Cast Votes From Space On Last Day Of Parliamentary Elections

Russian astronauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotra Dubrov voted from space in the parliamentary elections. Know how it happened.

Russia is in the process of parliamentary elections for three days, which began on September 17. Two astronauts present at the International Space Station also exercised their right to vote on the last day of the election today. They have voted in favour of their favourite candidate from space. Russian astronauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotra Dubrov were among those who participated in the voting. The two participated in online voting on Friday. The space agency Roscosmos uploaded the video regarding the same.

Astronaut Oleg Novitskiy said, "there is a ballot here for electronic voting. Now we are also ready to cast our vote in the elections." Significantly, parliamentary elections could give the Russian people a platform to vent anger on the economy, a crackdown on dissent, the government's attitude in the corona pandemic. Parliamentary elections are considered very important in view of the upcoming presidential elections. The ruling party United Russia is struggling hard to maintain its hold on control. Putin is leaving no stone unturned for it.

President Putin has also cast his precious vote on the first day of the election. Putin's fierce opponent Navalny who is in jail is also appealing to his candidates to vote. His supporters have designed an app called 'Smart Voting'. It was accused that the app was removed from Apple and Google Play stores on Friday before voting. This app was perceived as a tool to defeat Kremlin-backed candidates. Russia's Communist Party has also seen its voting turnout rise by 19 percent in recent weeks due to stable prices and rising prices.
