University of Pennsylvania's renowned a cappella group, Penn Masala, took centre stage at the White House before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, delivering an impressive performance of popular Bollywood hits. The group, comprised talented South Asian students, captivated a crowd of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 people gathered on the South Lawns to witness the ceremonial welcome for Modi.
Penn Masala kicked off their enchanting set with a rendition of 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' from the 1998 film 'Dil Se...' starring Shah Rukh Khan. They followed it up with a soulful performance of 'Jashn e Bahaaraa' from the historical drama 'Jodha Akbar' (2008), featuring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
In addition to their Bollywood renditions, Penn Masala showcased their versatility by delivering an interpretation of Coldplay's chart-topping track "Viva La Vida" from their 2008 album of the same name.
Founded in the 1990s by University of Pennsylvania students with a deep appreciation for Bollywood classics, Penn Masala has previously graced the White House stage on various occasions. Their unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, showcased through original compositions and harmonies, resonates with audiences worldwide.
Penn Masala's performances have taken them across the globe, including appearances at the IIFA Awards and their contribution to the Hollywood film and soundtrack of "Pitch Perfect 2" (2015), which earned them an American Music Award for Best Soundtrack.
Notably, Penn Masala, alongside American violinist and conductor Joshua Bell, has received an invitation to perform during the entertainment segment of the State dinner in honor of Prime Minister Modi.
Modi's visit to the United States commenced on Wednesday. It includes bilateral talks with President Joe Biden, as well as an address to a joint session of the US Congress.
PM Modi was extended a grand welcome at the White House on Thursday. He said that he was extremely happy at US President Joe Biden's gesture, as it was an honour for the 140 crore Indians. "I thank President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for this honour and their warm welcome and their friendship," PM Modi said at the White House's welcome ceremony for him. PM Modi said it was also a matter of great pride for the people of Indian origin living in the US.
