BRICS Summit ‘Will Contribute To A Better Planet’: PM Modi Arrives In Kazan, Likely To Meet Putin, Xi

PM Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. He is likely to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss global issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday to attend the 16th Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) Summit. He is likely to hold bilateral meetings with several leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Landed in Kazan for the BRICS Summit. This is an important Summit, and the discussions here will contribute to a better planet,” Modi posted on X after his arrival.

The Ministry of External Affairs also posted on X, stating, “PM @narendramodi lands in the heritage city of Kazan, Russia. On arrival, PM was warmly received by the Head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov.”

In a departure statement, PM Modi highlighted India's commitment to close cooperation within BRICS, noting that it has become a significant platform for dialogue on a range of global developmental issues. “The expansion of BRICS with the addition of new members last year has added to its inclusivity and agenda for the global good,” he said.

The 16th edition of the summit is themed 'Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security'.

The summit is seen as an effort by non-Western powers to assert their influence amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the escalating situation in West Asia.

Modi is likely to hold a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders, including Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi, on the sidelines of the summit, news agency PTI reported. These meetings are seen as a sign of improving relations, particularly following China’s stance on the war in Ukraine, where it emphasised respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also arrived in Kazan for the BRICS Summit, where he was greeted by Russian officials at the airport, according to Xinhua.

In the statement, PM Modi expressed that his visit to Kazan would further strengthen the 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership' between India and Russia. This visit follows Modi's trip to Moscow in July for the annual summit, during which he held talks with Putin.
