Nepal SC Orders Release Of French Serial Killer Charles Sobhraj After 19 Years In Jail

Charles Sobhraj, a French national of Indian and Vietnamese parentage, was charged with using a fake passport to enter Nepal and killing two US citizens.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of Nepal on Wednesday ordered the release of French serial killer Charles Sobhraj on the ground of his age, news agency ANI reported.

Sobhraj has been lodged at a jail in Nepal since 2003 on charges of murdering two American tourists.

The top court has also ordered his deportation within 15 days of his release.

It is to be noted that Charles Sobhraj, a French national of Indian and Vietnamese parentage, was charged with using a fake passport to enter Nepal and killing two US citizens – Connie Jo Boronzich, 29, and his girlfriend Canadian Laurent Carrière, 26 – in 1975.

Sobhraj was seen outside a casino in Nepal on September 1, 2003, after a newspaper published his photograph.

After his arrest, the police lodged two separate murder cases against Sobhraj on charges of murdering the couple in 1975 in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur.

He had been serving 21-year imprisonment in Kathmandu's Central Jail and was fined ₹2,000 for using a fake passport.

It is to be noted that the Supreme Court in 2010 had endorsed the life sentence slapped on Charles Sobhraj by the Kathmandu District Court.

The Bhaktapur District Court had then sentenced him for the murder of Canadian national in 2014.
