In a swift verdict, a Pakistani court has sentenced two men to death within a year of a murder case trial. Their crime — raping and killing a daughter in their own home. The girl was raped by her father and brother, who were found guilty and also fined PKR 1 crore each.
After murdering her, they secretly buried the body. But the crime came to light when a video of the incident went viral. Authorities later exhumed the body for post-mortem examination.
According to a report by Pakistani media website Dawn, Sessions Court Judge Justice Abdul Hafeez Bhutta convicted Mohammad Faisal and Abdul Sattar under Section 302(b) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The court ordered their execution by hanging until death and imposed a fine, which would be recovered from their property revenue.
The court ruled that the convicts would first serve six months in prison before being transferred to a district jail. Their death sentence will be sent to the Lahore High Court for confirmation. The court also stated that the convicts have 30 days to appeal against the verdict.
Case Background
The incident took place in Chak-477, Toba Tek Singh District of Punjab Province. The case surfaced on March 28, 2024, after a viral video triggered nationwide outrage. Reports state that on March 17, 2024, Maria Bibi was strangled to death by her father, Abdul Sattar, and her brother, Faisal.
Initially, Faisal confessed to the police that he had raped his sister and to conceal the crime and protect the family's honour, he murdered her with his father’s help. However, the post-mortem report found no evidence of sexual assault or pregnancy.
Following the murder, the family quietly buried Maria, but her other brother, Shahbaz, secretly recorded the entire incident. However, the police arrested Shahbaz and his wife, Sumaira, for not reporting the crime. The couple, however, claimed that Maria had confided in them a day before her death, alleging that her father and brother had raped her. The court later dropped all charges against them.
This case has once again sparked debates on honour killings in Pakistan, drawing attention to the urgent need for legal and social reforms.
