Nitesh Tiwari Shares His Journey From IIT Engineer to Filmmaker, Admits: 'I Wanted To Be A Writer'

Renowned filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, celebrated for his distinct storytelling style, recently opened up about his unconventional career path on 'Game Changers', hosted by Komal Nahta. Transitioning from an IIT engineer to one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed directors, Tiwari shared how his creative journey began during his college days.

Tiwari recalls life at IIT Bombay

Reflecting on his time at IIT Bombay, Tiwari revealed that his passion for creativity took root in the vibrant and competitive atmosphere of campus life. “I wouldn’t say since childhood, but during my time at IIT Bombay, I developed a strong inclination toward creative fields. Every hostel had competitions, and there was always an effort to do something original—even our pranks had a sense of creativity. That’s when I realized there was joy in doing the unexpected,” he shared.

This innovative approach soon translated into writing. Tiwari recalled how, even as a student, he experimented with original storytelling in plays, one-act performances, and mono-acting pieces. His love for writing stayed with him long after his engineering days, ultimately shaping his career in filmmaking.

When asked whether he ever envisioned filmmaking as his career, Tiwari admitted he had no such plans initially. “I wanted to be a writer, but I wasn’t sure if I had the capability. When you’re choosing a career, you often don’t know where your true passion lies,” he said.

On being a software developer

Before entering the film industry, Tiwari briefly worked as a software developer. “Back in the ‘90s, if you were good at studies, you either became a doctor or an engineer. I worked in a software company for four months, but I didn’t find peace there. I wanted to follow what I loved, not just what I was expected to do,” he added.

With 'Game Changers', Komal Nahta is redefining film industry conversations. Tune in to the YouTube channel to catch inspiring stories like Tiwari’s!
