Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first vertical lift rail bridge, the new Pamban Rail Bridge, on Ram Navami (April 6). The newly constructed 2.10-kilometre bridge will replace the century-old British-era Pamban Bridge, enhancing rail connectivity between Mandapam on the mainland and Rameswaram on Pamban Island.

The construction of the bridge began in February 2020 following the foundation stone laid by PM Modi in November 2019. However, the project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Asianet. Now, with completion in sight, the bridge is expected to be fully operational by April 2025.
PM Modi will inaugurate the structure soon after his visit to Sri Lanka on April 4-5. The bridge is constructed at the cost of Rs 535 crore.
With its modern engineering, the new Pamban Bridge will feature a 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span, allowing it to be raised to facilitate the smooth passage of ships and maritime traffic.
